Old-Time Harmony Singing Workshop

Using the Carter Family as a jumping off place, we will work with simple three part harmony in this beautiful style. Finding harmony lines that sometimes weave around the melody, sometimes cross or create unisons, students will develop a better ability to hear and find parts, as well as learn what gives these harmonies their particular old-time country sound, and power. No experience needed, just the desire to SING.

Evie Ladin is a banjo player, step-dancer, singer, songwriter and square-dance caller with a lifetime of experience in traditional American cultural arts. The polyrhythmic heat and funk of her clawhammer banjo, resonant voice, real stories and rhythmic dance - have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Celtic Connections, Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Evie started playing banjo at the age of 8, clogging since 5, and has a fluid expressiveness in these traditional Appalachian arts, even as she brings an urban edge and contemporary vision. Based in Oakland, CA, Evie tours solo, duo with Keith Terry, with her expansive stringband Evie Ladin Band, and with Keith Terry’s projects – she is the Executive Director of the International Body Music Festival since 2008. Evie has multiple recordings, plus two instructional DVDs Buckdancing for Beginners and Part Two: Freestyle. Evie teaches banjo, harmony singing and percussive dance, and calls rowdy square dances in the San Francisco Bay Area when you can find her there. Her live performance is a demonstrative, delightfully gorgeous storm.
