Jr Folk Stringband
TUESDAYS, Jan 2 -March 13
*Pre-requisite for this course is to have taken Jr. Folk intermediate classes, or currently take private lessons on the instrument they would play in stringband. OR exhibit aptitude in playing an instrument from previous experience (please contact Jalopy to speak to instructors).
Jr. Folk Music Stringband is a mixed ensemble group for fiddle, banjo, mandolin, voice, bass and guitar students. The class will be taught by either Hilary Hawke, Glendon Jones, and Christopher White based on availability.
More individual attention will be placed on each student to play more in tune, play in time, and express themselves through the music. The difference between Jr. Folk Stringband and intermediate and beginner Jr. Folk is the size and musicality of the group. Students will work on ensemble songs from the stringband and folk tradition (and more!). Students will work on playing melodies and developing skills to improvise and solo, and work on accompanying each other with back-up techniques.
The goal of every session is a 35-60 minute final performance in the Jalopy Theatre or alternative space.
Group discussions about the music are added to every lesson to enhance the experience, and allow the students to learn cooperatively. The students will have a short break during the period of two hours where they can bring a snack and interact with each other.
