DUOS AND TRIOS: HARMONY AND ONE-ON-A-PART SINGING
For intermediate to advanced singers
Wednesdays at 8pm
March 21, 28, April 11, 18, 25, May 2
In this class, we will dive into some of the true gems of American and World harmony singing, drawing from various folk traditions of two and three-part harmony singing. We'll explore songs from American genres such as old time, bluegrass, gospel, country, and shape note singing, and we'll also sample songs from Balkan, South African, and Sephardic traditions, among others. We will spend half of each class learning parts as a group, and in the other half you will have the opportunity to work in duets and trios on the songs we are learning. We will use improvisation exercises to help you learn to find your own harmony parts, and draw on some music theory along the way to help you understand how to hear chords and gain independence with your part. Ultimately, we will go beyond just learning the notes, working on tuning, blend, and phrasing to make your harmony singing as rich and satisfying as it can be.
